Today we commemorate the victims of the Chernobyl disaster. What social protection measures does the state guarantee them?

Every year, on 26 April, we mark the Day of Remembrance for the victims of the Chernobyl disaster and other nuclear accidents, to commemorate the bravery of those who were left disabled or even lost their lives helping to deal with the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986.
On this occasion, several thematic events will take place throughout the day, including a solemn rally and laying of flowers at the Chernobyl Memorial Complex on Rose Valley Street in the capital.
In this context, people with disabilities caused by their participation in eliminating the aftermath of the accident at the C.A.E. Chernobyl, persons who became ill with actinic disease or became disabled as a result of nuclear experiments, ionizing radiation damage and their consequences at civilian or military atomic targets during military or special service, and the families (spouses and, in their absence, one of the parents) of participants in eliminating the aftermath of the Chernobyl accident who have died receive an annual material aid of 1000 lei. This year, the National Social Assistance Agency will transfer the financial means to pay this aid to a number of 2157 people.
At the same time, for people who have suffered from the Chernobyl disaster, the state guarantees a number of compensations and material aids, including monthly state allowances in case of severe and medium disability, one-off compensation for damage to health, one-off annual material aid for recovery, nominal state allowances for outstanding merit to the state and other social insurance benefits such as old-age pensions, disability pensions and pensions in case of loss of breadwinner.
At the same time, people who have suffered from actinic disease, caused by radiation emissions from the Chernobyl power plant accident, and people with disabilities caused by this disaster are entitled to monthly cash compensation in return for insurance with food and food supplements that help to eliminate radionuclides from the body. From 1 April 2023, the amount of the compensation is 1136.99 lei.
In addition, starting April 1, 2023, the monthly state allowances granted to persons who participated in eliminating the aftermath of the Chernobyl accident, including those with severe and medium disability, persons who came in 1986 from the zone of alienation and received citizenship of the Republic of Moldova, as well as surviving spouses who were in a marital relationship with the deceased at the time of death, were increased by 250 lei. Currently, the size of this allowance is 1000 lei.
In addition, the pensions established under Law No 909/1992 on the social protection of citizens who suffered from the Chernobyl disaster have been indexed by 15%.
The Chernobyl nuclear accident occurred on the night of 26 April 1986 and is considered the largest nuclear accident in history.
